Beyond the Toothache: 5 Surprising Signs of Dental Problems

You probably expect, understandably, that if something is wrong with your tooth, it’s going to hurt. But pain isn’t the only indication of a problem with your oral health. You should be aware of a few surprising signs of dental problems.

At Downtown Dental Studio in New York City, we offer a range of dental treatments, from teeth cleanings to root canals. We also want to help you identify the signs of a dental issue so you can visit us in a timely manner.

Below, we discuss five signs other than a toothache that could indicate a problem.

5 signs of dental problems

1. Changes to the tooth’s appearance

A tooth that looks different than before is a clear sign that something may be wrong with the tooth. That’s especially true if pain accompanies the changed appearance.

Teeth may turn various colors, look worn, or change shape. If you notice any of these developments, it’s best to have one of our providers check it out.

A changed appearance that happens without pain doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. If a tooth root dies due to injury or decay, you may feel no pain, but the issue needs prompt attention.

2. Tooth sensitivity

People often confuse tooth sensitivity with pain. They’re not mutually exclusive, but you may have one or more sensitive teeth rather than true tooth pain. You often notice sensitivity when you eat or drink something hot or cold; some people have teeth sensitive to both.

Sensitivity may mean tooth decay in the form of a cavity, but you can have healthy teeth and still experience sensitivity. That’s still considered a dental problem, and it’s best to understand why it’s happening so we can treat the problem.

We may recommend using toothpaste for sensitive teeth or wearing a night guard

3. Signs of infection

Infection often goes hand in hand with tooth pain, but it sometimes causes no discomfort. You may only notice the problem when you look in the mirror and see swelling in your cheek.

Infection can also bring fever, swollen lymph nodes, and even difficulty breathing or swallowing.

4. Bad breath

Bad breath isn’t just an aesthetic issue; it could signal a number of oral health problems, including dry mouth, infection, tonsil stones, GERD, and oral thrush. If you have persistent bad breath, schedule a visit with the team at Downtown Dental Studio.

5. Pain somewhere else

Sometimes, tooth problems can cause pain in areas of the body near the mouth. Headaches, earaches, jaw pain, and other types of discomfort can all refer back to your dental health.

So, if you’re unable to determine the cause of your frequent headaches, or your doctor says nothing is wrong with your ears, make an appointment to ensure your teeth are healthy.

Don’t ignore unusual symptoms in or around your mouth simply because you feel no discomfort. To make an appointment at our state-of-the-art dental office in the Financial District, call us or book online today.
